a never-ever.

A never-ever.  The ultimate beginner.  One who has ever considered trying.

I love the endearing sentiment of this ski term, “a never-ever”. I learned it’s meaning the other day.  While I’m not a never-ever or a novice (I’ve been growing on skis for about seven years now) I once was.

As comfortable as I may be now I still have a lot of progress to make to realize this indefinite life goal of achieving a stellar schuss or slalom.  Endurance.  Confidence.  Stance. Style.  Aptitude.  Altitude.  You know, all the grace that comes with (self) exploration and evolution.

In listening to the conversation about beginner skiers, I realized that in fact, we were all never-evers at one thing or another at some point in time during our existence.  We still are.  We always will be.  We’re always in pursuit … always reflecting … always wondering.

But what if we were to embrace the innocence and adventure of being a never-ever? The quest to challenge ourselves beyond our comfort zone wouldn’t appear so daring or daunting. The cause for curiosity to conquer the never-ever and perhaps turn something unknown into something found forevermore. Like chasing fresh powder, I never-ever thought I would build esteem while playing on skis.

But I tried, and I’m still trying, and the freedom from never to forever is exhilerating. I hope the beginning’s end leads to another never-ever. I don’t intend to ever stop trying.
