30-day song challenge. day 6: a song that reminds you of somewhere.

“there goes the fear” by doves.

You turn around and life’s passed you by
You look to ones you love to ask them why
You look to those you love to justify
You turned around and life’s passed you by
Passed you by again

And late last night
Makes up her mind
Another fight
left behind
There goes the fear again
Let it go
There goes the fear

Close your brown eyes
And lay down next to me
Close your eyes, lay down
‘Cos there goes the fear
Let it go

You turn around and life’s passed you by
You look to ones you love to ask them why
you look to those you love to justify, why
you turned around and life’s passed you by

Think of me when you’re coming down
But don’t look back when leaving town
Oh think of me when he’s calling out
But don’t look back when leaving town
Think of me when you close your eyes
But don’t look back when you break all ties
Think of me when you’re coming down
But don’t look back when leaving town today

There goes the fear again
Let it go
There goes the fear
Let it go

Think of me when you close your eyes
But don’t look back when you break all ties
Think of me when you’re coming down
But don’t look back when leaving town today

i remember discovering british indie rock group the doves on my first road trip to new york city.  only in my early 20s yet for some reason i felt as though life was passing me by.  so, where else does one go to set herself free?

new york city of course.

and it was there that i would become intrigued by bright lights, grungy bars, art precincts, wannabe rockstars, philosophy of the self, vintage markets and street culture.  every time i hear this song it reminds me of how alive the city made me feel.  and from then on i dreamed about living life amongst a loud scene where i could just lose myself, close my brown eyes….and let go of any fear.

i prefer the acoustic recording of the song over the original track:
